Tim was diagnosed with multilple myeloma (cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow) in August of 2009. He is at a stage 2 with 50% of his bone marrow cancerous. Tim has started his cycles of chemotherapy with the hope of having a stem cell transplant within the next 4/5 months. While mulitple myeloma is currently incurable, it is treatable.
Tim has returned home after a 17 day stay in the hospital after his stem cell transplant. Each day he is getting stronger and the nausea is slowly going away. Tim is considered in remission now after 5 months of chemo/steroids and his transplant. He must now build his body back up and that includes his immune system. He would like to thank everyone (especially the Gilliam family) for all their support and prayers. He could not have done this without his family, friends and the staff and students at Central High School.
Tim is back to work!!!! Starting August 12, 2010, he will have to start taking a small dose of chemo each day. A number of clinical trials have shown that taking the chemo (Revlimid) keeps him in remission longer. While it hasn't proven anything in regards to the survival rate, it is a way to keep it in remission longer until they find a cure...which we all pray they do.
